Pipes with sandwich insulation: steel, basalt wool, polyurethane foam and protective sheath
Pipes with multilayer “sandwich” insulation are an innovative solution for engineering networks that require maximum thermal insulation and resistance to external influences. Thanks to the multilayer structure, these pipes combine the advantages of various insulation materials, which makes them ideal for heating mains, hot water supply and industrial systems with a coolant temperature of up to 250 ° C.
Sandwich pipe insulation design:
- Inner steel pipe:
- Material: carbon or stainless steel.
- Purpose: transportation of hot water, steam or other heat carriers.
- Working pressure: up to 2.5 MPa.
- Basalt wool layer:
- Density: 100–150 kg/m³.
- Thermal conductivity coefficient: 0.045–0.055 W/(m K).
- Temperature range: up to +700°C.
- Function: provides primary thermal insulation and fire protection.
- Layer of polyurethane foam (PU):
- Thermal conductivity coefficient: 0.027–0.033 W/(m K).
- Thickness: from 30 to 70 mm, depending on the pipe diameter.
- Function: additional thermal insulation and reduction of heat loss.
- Outer protective shell:
- Material: high-density polyethylene (PE) or galvanized steel (Spiro).
- Purpose: protection against mechanical damage, moisture, ultraviolet light and corrosion.
Technical characteristics of pipes with “sandwich” insulation:
- Heat carrier temperature: up to +250°C.
- Maximum working pressure: depends on the inner steel pipe, up to 2.5 MPa.
- Heat loss: reduced by 40–60% compared to conventional insulation solutions.
- Pipe diameter: from 32 to 426 mm.
- Service life: up to 30–50 years if properly installed and operated.
Advantages of multilayer sandwich insulation pipes:
- Effective thermal insulation: the combination of basalt wool and polyurethane foam ensures minimal heat loss even at high temperatures.
- Fire protection: basalt wool is a non-combustible material, which increases the overall fire safety of the system.
- Corrosion resistance: the outer shell reliably protects the insulating layers from moisture penetration and mechanical damage.
- Cost-effectiveness: a multi-layered approach allows you to reduce heating and heating network maintenance costs.
- Durability: insulation does not lose its properties for decades.
- Easy installation: pre-insulated systems reduce installation time and also minimize the risk of insulation errors.
Areas of application:
- District heating networks: for hot water supply and heating mains.
- Industrial pipelines: transporting steam, hot water, oil or chemicals.
- Heat stations and boiler houses: ensuring energy efficiency of local systems.
- Systems with high fire safety requirements.
